'Democratise beauty.' Read interview now!

Updated: Apr 17, 2023

Bona-fide magazine is intentionally designed to combat standardized beauty.

Susan Mahachi, a school counselor:

"I feel like myself."

Susan tried the NYX 'Honey Dew Me Up' natural glow serum to moisturize her face and redefine her unique facial features.

Despite breaking stereotypes of femininity, BF aims to anchor the message that women can go outside without makeup while still feeling powerful and gorgeous. Natural beauty is considered unappealing and 'drifts away' from feminine identities. However, beauty is not built in a powder room. Instead, it is a naturally constructed phenomenon that desires to be nurtured with love and care. So, feel good in your skin.

Profession

"Helping others is not only my duty but also my nature."

Susan Mahachi acts as a friend to students at Gems FirstPoint School. She has aided many students with personal, psychological, and emotional circumstances. Her door is always open to discuss issues or even converse over coffee.

After an interview with Susan Mahachi, she passionately considered the damage of social media to self-esteem. Susan says, "Children at school come to me telling me that they have over 10+ hours of screen time and simply cannot stop using it". While research has shown a strong positive correlation between depressive symptoms and screen time, Susan also points out that sometimes social media can benefit individuals as it may be the only way they can authentically present themselves.

Additionally, 47% of individuals state that social media lowers their self-esteem, and Susan believes this results in excess makeup usage. Susan says, "Some teenagers come to school with a full face of makeup which could be due to social media usage and how it can increase comparisons. On the other hand, some students believe that makeup is the only thing they look forward to doing the next day and the only way they can feel confident".

Despite these beliefs, research has shown that 70% of social media users use social media mainly before bed, which has been correlated with reduced concentration and disrupted sleep. Hence, we advise adults to limit their children's screen time and attempt to limit their own.
